Earth 2100 (spelled as earth2100) is a television program that was presented by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) network on June 2, 2009, from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm Eastern time. Hosted by ABC journalist Bob Woodruff, the two-hour special explored what a worst-case future might look like if humans do not take action on current or impending problems that could threaten civilization. The problems addressed in the program include climate change, overpopulation, and misuse of energy resources. The events parallel the life of a fictitious storyteller, “Lucy” (told through the use of motion comics, or limited animation), as she describes how the events affect her life. The program included predictions of a dystopian Earth in the years 2015, 2030, 2050, 2085, and 2100 by scientists, historians, social anthropologists, and economists, including Jared Diamond, Thomas Homer-Dixon, Peter Gleick, James Howard Kunstler, Heidi Cullen, and Joseph Tainter. According to Executive Producer Michael Bicks, “this program was developed to show the worst-case scenario for human civilization. Again, we are not saying that these events will happen — rather, that if we fail to seriously address the complex problems of climate change, resource depletion and overpopulation, they are much more likely to happen.”

It’s hard to find a version of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte that’s as well sung as this 2003 Covent Garden production. Led by the eminent Mozartian, Sir Colin Davis, orchestra and singers present a warm, often intense vision of the opera, not as the fairy tale it’s often taken for, but as a human drama of the passage from misguided beliefs to mature knowledge of self. Diana Damrau is the Queen of the Night for our time, with show-stopping bravura singing that tosses off the score’s terrifying high notes with almost casual abandon. Her acting and her fright outfit never leave you in doubt that she’s the evil presence here, even when she’s pretending to be a good mom concerned about her daughter, Pamina. Dorothea Röschmann is superb, floating pianissimo notes to die for and singing with a beautifully rounded soprano allied to a dramatic sense that make her Ach, ich fuhl's so moving. Will Hartman is a virile Tamino, a bit heavier of voice than most of the lyric tenors who take the role, but singing well. Like most Tamino’s, he’s upstaged by Papageno, the bird-catcher who’s his sidekick. Baritone Simon Keenlyside offers the best-sung Papageno one could hope to hear, and while he’s funny in many of his more physical scenes, he replaces the usual clownish buffoon with an earth-bound Everyman. The noble Sarastro, the lovers’ guide to self-realization, is well sung by Franz-Josef Selig, whose ample bass easily encompasses the low Fs that make most basses sound strained.

With John Woo’s mighty “Red Cliff” having been in production for an age before finally storming into Chinese cinemas, it was always inevitable that a number of other films
would attempt to steal a little of its thunder, or at least to cash in on its inevitable success. The highest profile and arguably the most promising of these is “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon”, from Hong Kong director Daniel Lee (who despite having recently slipped up with “Dragon Squad, has a solid track record with the likes of “A Fighter’s Blues” and “Black Mask”), which also draws upon the rich drama of the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history, and which actually beat its rival to screens by some time, quite nicely filling the gap following Peter Chan’s excellent costume epic “Warlords”. The film boasts an impressive cast including megastar Andy Lau, continuing his run of Mandarin-language period pieces, the legendary Sammo Hung, and the internationally popular Maggie Q, with appearances from Shaw Brothers heroes Ngok Wah and Ti Lung thrown in for good measure.

Hey folks, Valkor here. This past weekend a friend of mine slipped me a film that he says should be featured at TOV. So I thought “Hey I’m up for the challenge, bring it.” Not only did he bring it, he brought it to the table and opened it. And what I found inside was an awesome film from Japan entitled “Shinobi: Heart Under Blade” and what a fantastic movie this is.
