The story of the Zeppelins is well known to most twentieth century history enthusiasts. In the 1920s and the 1930s they symbolised hope, progress and innovation. Yet infamous and terrible catastrophes including the famous Hindenburg disaster in 1937 effectively ended their function as a people carrier.

yet there is an unknown chapter to the story of Zeppelins, the history of what is to date, the world’s only flying aircraft carrier. Built in the 1930s for the US Navy, the USS Macon was used as a scout over the Pacific.
It carried a crew of 83 plus four propeller aircraft which could take off and land from the airborne zeppelin. It was possible to hold the propeller aircraft in a hanger inside the zeppelin, from where they were released into the air using a trapeze system. In 1935, the Macon, the only airship ever to be used by the US Navy took off from California during a practice flight. It was hit by a strong gust of wind that resulted in damage to the helium tanks and the zeppelin ended up at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
This new documentary features amazing unseen archive footage from the Macon’s original test flights, showing the planes landing and taking off from the flying aircraft carrier. It also features footage from the recent wreck dives and interviews with some of the families of the 81 survivors of the disaster as well a dramatic reconstruction.
